You are original. Your music is unique. How do you create these sound collages which make your songs so distinctive?

This time it´s the strings (violin, viola, and cello) which have contributed very much to the whole sound of the album. By sound collages, do you mean the ending of “Little Mirror”? We played lots of electric guitars with lots of delay and mixed them together and then added an interview with Larry Norman to it, that I did for fun about three years ago when we met in Berlin.

On “To Hungry Listeners” we used recordings from representatives of the early 6o’s civil rights movement, played from an old scratchy record, which gives the song a distinctive atmosphere and draws you into another time era. Into the era of Peter, Paul and Mary, my daddy says.

For “Before The Mountains” you were not only active as singer but also as producer. How come?

I already have a musical career behind me with managers, record companies, a move to Nashville and much more, and I got used to people relieving me of a lot work (Concert bookings, record promotion, etc.) Because these people did their jobs, like producing my records, on such a good level, I did not had the ambition to try it on my own and for some reason I didn´t really believe that I could do it by myself.

Just after the move into a totally new phase of my life, in an artist community in a castle near Dresden, with its own studio in the back yard, and after I broke up with the big music industry, the idea came up to record “Before The Mountains” with my good friend Arno. The timing was just right and I was emotionally prepared for this i guess, just like a birth..(i know what it is like..hehe)

What is important for you to express with the 15 tracks of your record?

I can´t explain it; I work a lot of my subconscious into my music; so many things I sing and write are often unconscious. In general I deal with life and how I live it, like in a line from Henry D.Thoreau “I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear – I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life”, this is all that matters.

What marks the single steps that led to the record?

Separation and new beginning. To recognize who I really am and what I really want, I had to free myself from old bonds. This was a painful but liberating process. For the last three years we have lived together with friends in a community, where we try to share our lifes , which was an important step for the existence of this album.

After I had said goodbye to the music business for good, I wanted to see everything trough by myself, because in the search for ”my” music, I didn’t want to be influenced in any way, and I needed time to find myself.

Then one day I thought about what it would mean to really trust someone, and that this only would be possible if I would put all my confidence in that person. With that a whole new process began.
I started to record the album with close friends, and discovered secret treasures which i probably would have not been found without them, because I would certainly have gotten lost along the way.

The whole creative process which was set loose by the recording continues.
The video to the single “What a Happy Life” (you can find it on YouTube) would never have come to life if creative friends hadn’t been part of it.
Right now friends are helping with the promotion of my album, and we somehow are all learning from each other. I´m excited to see where this leads..

You also did this album in order to learn. What have you taken away from this?

I´m still learning. “Before The Mountains” led me to a new, essential liberty, which I recalled from my early recordings when I just did music without thinking about what comes next.

Besides the music. the artwork shows that this album is something extraordinary. Did you want to design the booklet as a “book” you page through?

Yeah, I guess. It is definitely one of the most beautiful booklets I’ve ever seen.

What is the best thing for you about “Before The Mountains”?

That every thing belongs together, and nothing works without the rest. The holistic nature of the work, that it keeps going, because it is timeless.

Du bist ein Original. Deine Musik ist einzigartig. Wie kreierst du diese „Soundcollagen“, die deine Lieder so unverwechselbar machen?

Diesmal sind es vor allem Streicher: Geige, Bratsche und Cello, die viel zum Gesamtsound
des Albums beigetragen haben. Mit Soundcollagen meinst Du bestimmt den Schluss von „Little Mirror“, oder? Da haben wir ganz viele elektische Gitarren übereinandergelegt und ich hatte mal mit meinem Diktiergerät ein Gepräch zwischen Larry Norman und mir zum Spass aufgenommen, dass haben wir auch noch dazugemischt.
Bei “ To Hungry Listeners“ haben wir zum Kratzen einer leiernden Schallplatte Aufnahmen aus den frühen 60iger von Vertretern der Bürgerrechtsbewegung gemischt, das gibt dem Song eine ganz eigene Stimmung. Mein Papa meinte, es würde ihn von der Atmosphäre an Peter, Paul and Mary erinnern (ein Folktrio aus den 60igern).

Für „Before The Mountains“ warst du nicht nur als Sängerin aktiv, sondern auch als Produzentin? Wie kam es dazu?

Ich habe ja schon eine Musiklaufbahn hinter mir, mit Managern, Plattenfirmen, einem Umzug nach Nashville und vielem mehr und hatte mich daran gewöhnt, dass Leute mir soviel wie möglich abnahmen. (vom Konzerte buchen bis zum promoten meiner Cds u.v.m)
Weil die Leute ihre Arbeit meistens auf hohem Niveau machten, u.a auch das Plattenproduzieren, hatte ich nicht die Energie und sah auch keine wirkliche Notwendigkeit es selbst zu probieren.
Erst nach dem Umzug in einen total neuen Lebensabschnitt, in eine Künstlerkommunität auf ein Schloss bei Dresden, mit eigenem Studio im Hinterhaus, und erst nachdem ich mich vom gängigen Musikbusiness verabschiedet hatte, kam der Gedanke auf “ Before The Mountains“ mit meinem guten Freund Arno aufzunehmen. Die Zeit war einfach einfach reif und ich war innerlich darauf vorbereitet, wie auf eine Geburt.

Was ist dir wichtig mit den 15 Songs deines aktuellen Albums auszudrücken?

Ich kann das nicht erklären, ich verarbeite durch Musik viel aus meinem Unterbewusstsein, vieles worüber ich schreibe ist mir gar nicht immer bewusst. Generell beschäftigt mich das Leben und wie ich es lebe. Wie aus einer Zeile von Henry D.Thoreau:
„Ich wollte nicht das Leben, was nicht Leben war, das Leben ist so kostbar. Ich wollte tief Leben, das Mark des Lebens aussaugen….“, das ist alles was für mich wichtig ist.

Was Kennzeichnet die einzelnen Etappen die zur Entstehung der CD führten?

Trennung und Neuanfang.
Um zu erkennen, wer ich bin und was ich wirklich will musste ich mich von alten Bindungen lösen, das war ein schmerzhafter aber befreiender Prozess.
Seit 3 Jahren leben wir mit Freunden zusammen in einer Lebensgemeindschaft, eine wichtige Etappe für dieses Album! Nachdem ich dem Musikbusiness erstmal ade gesagt hatte, wollte ich alles ganz alleine durchziehen, weil ich bei der Suche nach „meiner“ Musik in keiner Weise beeinflusst werden wollte und weil ich Zeit brauchte um mich wiederzufinden. Dann habe ich eines Tages darüber nachgedacht, was es heisst jemandem zu vertrauen und dass das nur geht, wenn ich demjenigen alles zutraue und damit begann ein ganz neuer Prozess. Ich fing dann an mit engen Freunden das Album aufzunehmen und entdeckte dabei Schätze, die ich alleine nicht gefunden hätte, weil ich mich bestimmt auf dem Weg verlaufen hätte.
Der ganze kreative Prozess, der mit den Albumaufnahmen freigetreten wurde, geht weiter. Das Video zur Albumsingle “ What a happy life “ (kann man auf youtube anschauen) wäre auch nicht entstanden, wenn nicht innovative Freunde mitgemacht hätten. Jetzt helfen Freunde beim Verbreiten des Albums und wir alle lernen dabei voneinander. Ich bin gespannt, wo uns das alles hinführt.

Du hast „Before The Mountains“ unter anderem auch gemachen um zu lernen. Was konntest du aus dieser Zeit mitnehmen?

Ich lerne immernoch, “ Before The Mountains“ hat mich zurück in die Freiheit geführt, die ich von meinen allerersten Aufnahmen kenne als ich einfach Musik gemacht habe, ohne darüber nachzudenken, was als nächstes kommt.

Neben der Musik zeigt auch die Ausstattung, dass dieses Album etwas Besonderes ist. Wolltest du von Anfang an die CD-Hülle als „Buch“ zum Aufblättern gestalten?

Ja, ich glaub schon. Es ist auf jeden Fall eins der schönsten Booklets, die ich je gesehen habe!

Was ist für dich das Beste an „Before The Mountains“?

Das alles zusammengehört und nichts ohne das andere funktioniert.
Das Ganzheitliche, das Gesamtwerk und dass es weitergeht immer weiter, weil es zeitlos ist.
